kids career day ideas - Talking Passion & Design

Writer's picture: Elliot HayesElliot Hayes

I had a fun day when I went to my children’s class for “career day.” My little ones were so proud, and I had a fantastic time telling all the kids about starting a business. It was entertaining talking to them about my passion for design.

They really are preschoolers, and I didn’t entirely use the term “entrepreneur,” but they surely understood that they can do what they love and make a brand with a logo.

If you want to check it yourself, there is a 6-minute video where you can see my kid charm in action. But here’s a hint! Patience! I am only half joking, but be prepared for when you ask a question and hope that they all do not answer at the same time, which brings me to my first word of advice…

(1) Engagement:

Generally, it is wiser to engage younger children than older crowds, as their attention span is significantly shorter.

If you keep speaking in abstract terms without any interaction, like “Entrepreneurship” and “Branding,” for instance, the audience would be indifferent and perhaps roll on the floor or nose-pick. I engaged them by asking what their “passions” were and what the things that really excited them were.

I integrated the “Tell me about your favorite color” with “Design is all about textures, Patterns, and Colours.” I made space for interaction by showing them some logos of brands I had designed and asking if they recognized the brand and the room we created.

(2) Expectation:

No matter how young they are, a kid's career day ideas or an adult, they still do some form of revision and preparation. I took 30 minutes to sit down and plan what I might want people to do, the engaging questions I was ready to ask, and what props needed to be brought.

(3) You Are Now Their Level:

I sat in a rocking chair that was very close to them. I suggest sitting in a children’s chair or even on the floor with them. It is easier for them to relate to you and do better when they are at your level.

(4) An Event:

Let them do something. Bring a prop of some item from your workplace that is safe for them to see, gently touch, and even pass around. Spend a little time with them.

I brought flowers so they could participate in “decorating” bouquets for their classroom. Children of this age are very inquisitive and interested and LOVE to imitate you. Involving them in the hands-on activity helps nurture a feeling of pride and accomplishment.

(5) Enjoy Yourself:

If you have a highly obnoxious “kid voice,” feel free to use it. Get over the top! Get active! While some people make all of us feel like there might be too much of us to handle, when it comes to children, “too much of you” is never the case, especially when you need to support them.

Enjoy the video! For my fellow Rochester, NY, residents, this is Holy Cross Pre-K, Mrs. Stampfer, and Mrs. Popovich’s class.

Conclusion

The activities directed toward children's career day themes provide great, fun, and engaging ideas for preschool children. The variety of activities enables children to enjoy learning about different professions. Storytelling and actual learning are more exciting than the theoretical approach to education.
